Part of the cloister roof of a historic convent in Rabat has collapsed, causing concern over the preservation of one of the town’s important religious and architectural landmarks. The incident occurred recently, with sections of the old roofing giving way due to prolonged deterioration and structural weakness that had developed over many years.

The convent, which holds significant historical and cultural value for Rabat, has long been admired for its traditional architecture and its peaceful cloister that has served as a place of reflection for generations. The collapse has prompted immediate attention from local authorities and heritage officials, who have visited the site to assess the extent of the damage and to ensure the safety of the surrounding areas.

Preliminary evaluations suggest that age, exposure to weather and lack of extensive maintenance have contributed to the weakening of the structure. Efforts are now underway to secure the site and prevent further collapse, while plans are being discussed for urgent restoration works to protect what remains of the cloister roof.

The incident has renewed calls for greater investment in the upkeep of Malta’s historic religious buildings, many of which require continuous care to survive the test of time.
