A group of non-governmental organisations has called on the prime minister to remove Planning Authority boss Martin Buttigieg, warning that if action is not taken the people will take matters into their own hands. The NGOs issued a strong joint statement expressing deep frustration over what they described as continued failures in planning and environmental protection under Buttigieg’s leadership.
According to the organisations, recent decisions taken by the Planning Authority have raised serious concerns about transparency, accountability and the preservation of Malta’s natural and built heritage. They argued that public trust in the institution has been severely eroded and that its current direction is no longer serving the interests of the community or the environment.
The NGOs said they have repeatedly raised their concerns through official channels but have seen little meaningful response, which has now led them to issue a more direct ultimatum to the government. They stressed that the prime minister has a responsibility to act decisively to restore confidence in the planning system and to ensure that it operates in the public interest.
The statement concluded with a warning that continued inaction would prompt wider public mobilisation and protest, as citizens grow increasingly discontented with the state of planning in the country.
