Pope Francis has a significant connection with Malta, a small island nation in the Mediterranean that he affectionately referred to as a “luminous land”. This description reflects Malta’s commitment to welcoming people, particularly those seeking refuge. The Pope’s visit to Malta in April 2022 was a notable event, marked by strong calls for compassion, solidarity with migrants, and resistance to corruption.

During his two-day trip, Pope Francis met with national leaders, led prayer at the Ta’ Pinu Shrine in Gozo, visited migrants at the John XXIII Peace Lab in Ħal Far, and celebrated Mass in Floriana, drawing tens of thousands of people. The theme of his visit was “They showed us unusual kindness”, inspired by Acts 28:2, which references the shipwreck of Saint Paul on Malta’s shores.

The Pope’s connection with Malta goes beyond his visit. He praised the country’s commitment to welcoming brothers and sisters seeking refuge, highlighting its importance in today’s world. Malta’s leaders, including President Myriam Spiteri Debono and Prime Minister Robert Abela, have paid tribute to Pope Francis’ legacy, describing him as a global beacon of peace, compassion, and humility.

A commemorative book titled “Luminous Kindness” was launched after the Pope’s visit, featuring photographs and texts from his journey. The book seeks to rekindle the profound messages and fond memories gifted to the Maltese people by the Holy Father.

Overall, Pope Francis’ connection with Malta reflects his emphasis on kindness, compassion, and welcoming others, values that are deeply rooted in the country’s culture and history.
