The death of Pope Francis has sparked an outpouring of condolences and tributes from world leaders, reflecting his profound impact on global affairs and his commitment to compassion, social justice, and interfaith dialogue. French President Emmanuel Macron praised the Pope for consistently advocating for the most vulnerable, particularly during times of war and brutality, describing him as a champion of “brotherly humankind”.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered Pope Francis as a beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage, highlighting his dedication to serving the poor and downtrodden. Modi also fondly recalled his meetings with the Pope, expressing admiration for his commitment to inclusive development. Similarly, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described the Pope’s death as a “profound loss” for the world, citing his tireless efforts to promote tolerance, peace, and compassion.

US President Donald Trump offered his condolences, saying “Rest in Peace Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him!” Vice President JD Vance, who met with the Pope on Easter Sunday, shared a heartfelt tribute, recalling the Pope’s homily during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic as “really quite beautiful”. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended his deepest condolences to the global Catholic community, acknowledging the Pope’s tireless efforts to promote a fairer world.

Other leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and German Chancellor-designate Friedrich Merz, also paid tribute to the Pope’s legacy. Merz highlighted the Pope’s “indefatigable commitment” to the most vulnerable, justice, and reconciliation. Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised the Pope’s dedication to interfaith dialogue and his vocal advocacy for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The Pope’s death has been met with an outpouring of grief from across the globe, with leaders from diverse backgrounds and faiths coming together to pay their respects. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed praised the Pope’s legacy of compassion, humility, and service to humanity, while Lebanese President Joseph Aoun remembered the Pope’s repeated calls to protect Lebanon and preserve its identity and diversity.
