Malta’s solid waste generation has jumped by 17.6% to 3.5 million tonnes in 2024, raising concerns about the country’s waste management capabilities. This increase highlights the need for effective waste management strategies to mitigate environmental impacts. According to the Times of Malta, this surge underscores the importance of implementing sustainable waste management practices.

The global context is also worrying, with municipal solid waste generation predicted to grow from 2.1 billion tonnes in 2023 to 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050, as reported by the UN Environment Programme. Malta’s waste management challenges are part of a broader global issue, emphasizing the need for urgent action.
