Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela is pushing for an anti-deadlock mechanism to appoint the Chief Justice after a recent vote failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in parliament. The nomination of Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera garnered 39 votes in favor and 34 against, falling short of the necessary majority. Abela’s proposal aims to address the impasse, allowing for appointments to key positions like the Chief Justice through a simple majority vote if consensus isn’t reached.
This move comes amidst concerns about political bickering deadlocking the system, with Abela emphasizing the need for a mechanism to ensure timely appointments. The Opposition has expressed reservations, highlighting the importance of cross-party consensus for such crucial positions.
