A striking new structure has taken over Valletta’s entrance, sparking debate among locals and visitors alike. The City Gate, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, has replaced the previous gate, aiming to restore the original grandeur of the 16th-century fortifications. The new gate is a minimalist, 8-meter-wide breach in the wall, flanked by powerful steel blades and two 25-meter-high poles, evoking a sense of strength and austerity.
While some praise the design for its elegance and historical sensitivity, others criticize it for being too modern or imposing. The project has also involved restoring the surrounding area, including the creation of a new public space and an open-air theatre within the ruins of the former Royal Opera House. The transformation has breathed new life into Valletta’s entrance, but opinions remain divided on whether it’s an improvement.
