Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that China and the United States should be partners rather than rivals, according to state media, in a renewed call for cooperation between the world’s two largest economies. Xi made the remarks during a recent meeting where he emphasized the importance of stable and constructive relations for global peace and prosperity.
The Chinese leader noted that despite differences and competition in certain areas, both nations share broad common interests and have a responsibility to work together on major global challenges such as climate change, economic recovery and international security. He stressed that confrontation and decoupling would not benefit either side and would instead create uncertainty for the rest of the world.
Xi stated that mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation should form the foundation of bilateral ties, urging both sides to enhance dialogue and manage disagreements in a responsible manner. He also expressed hope that the United States would adopt a more positive and rational view of China’s development.
The comments come at a time of ongoing tensions over trade, technology and geopolitical issues, but they signal Beijing’s desire to maintain open channels of communication and prevent relations from deteriorating further.
