Prince Harry has stepped away from Sentebale, the charity he co-founded nearly two decades ago, following internal conflicts that led to the mass resignation of trustees. Describing the situation as “shocking” and “heartbreaking,” both Harry and his co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, announced they were stepping down as patrons.
The dispute centers around the charity’s chair, Dr. Sophie Chandauka, who was appointed in 2023. Trustees had requested her resignation, citing concerns over governance and staff welfare. Instead, she took legal action to retain her position, further escalating tensions. In response, multiple trustees—including longtime supporters of the organization—resigned, citing a loss of confidence in the board’s leadership.
Sentebale, founded in 2006 in memory of Princess Diana, focuses on supporting vulnerable children in Lesotho and Botswana, particularly those affected by HIV/AIDS. The charity’s leadership insists that its restructuring efforts remain on course, despite the upheaval. Meanwhile, Chandauka has defended her position, claiming she acted to uphold the charity’s integrity and has raised concerns over governance failures, alleged abuse of power, and discrimination.
The UK’s Charity Commission has confirmed it is reviewing the situation to assess potential regulatory action.
