Kids And Social Media What Would Change Under New EU Law

The European Union is considering new legislation that could bring significant changes to how children interact with social media platforms, with the aim of providing stronger protection for young users online. The proposed law focuses on limiting exposure to harmful content, reducing addictive features and ensuring greater parental oversight over how children use digital services.

Under the new rules, social media companies would be required to implement stricter age verification systems and introduce default safety settings that are specifically designed for minors. This could include restrictions on targeted advertising, limitations on time spent online and stronger controls against algorithms that push inappropriate or damaging material to younger audiences.

The law also seeks to give parents and guardians more tools to monitor and manage their children’s online activity, while at the same time empowering children with clearer information about their digital rights and privacy. Platforms that fail to comply with the new requirements could face substantial fines and regulatory action.

Supporters of the legislation argue that such measures are necessary to address growing concerns about mental health, online exploitation and privacy risks linked to excessive social media use among children. If adopted, the new EU law would mark a major shift in how social media is regulated and could set a precedent for similar protections in other regions.
