Hundreds of migrants crossed into Spain’s North African exclave of Ceuta after entering from Morocco, in one of the largest arrivals the territory has seen in recent months.
The group made the attempt early in the morning, taking advantage of low tide and reduced visibility to reach the border fence and swim or climb into Ceuta. Spanish border guards and emergency services were deployed to the area and worked to provide medical assistance, food, and shelter to those who made it across.
Authorities in both Spain and Morocco said they were coordinating to manage the situation and to prevent further mass attempts. Ceuta, which shares a land and sea border with Morocco, has long been a focal point for migration into Europe due to its geographic position. The latest surge puts additional pressure on reception centers in the city, which are now working to process and accommodate the new arrivals.
Local officials described the scenes as challenging but said priority was being given to humanitarian support while security was maintained at key entry points. Human rights organizations on the ground called for dignified treatment and faster processing, noting that many of those who crossed had been waiting in difficult conditions.
The Spanish government said it remains in contact with Moroccan counterparts to strengthen cooperation on border management and address the root causes driving people to make the journey. For now, attention in Ceuta is focused on caring for those who arrived and restoring normal operations along the border.
