US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi are set to co-chair a Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, aimed at ending the war in the Gaza Strip and promoting peace and stability in the Middle East. The summit, which will be attended by leaders from over 20 countries, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron, seeks to usher in a new era of regional security and stability.
The meeting comes after a ceasefire agreement was reached between Israel and Hamas, brokered by the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. The agreement includes a hostage-prisoner exchange, with Israel set to release 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 Gazans held in Israeli jails in exchange for 47 Israeli hostages. However, Hamas has announced that it will not participate in the summit, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attendance remains uncertain.
The summit aims to enhance efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza, and promote regional security and stability. The international community, including the European Council represented by its president, Antonio Costa, is committed to supporting these efforts and contributing to the implementation of the peace plan.
