Former Transport Malta CEO Jonathan Borg has been chosen as Malta’s next nonresident ambassador to the Republic of Panama.
Following Borg’s departure from his position at Transport Malta just under a year into his term, the appointment was fully supported across party lines in an April 7 parliamentary committee session.
Borg was removed from his role as Transport Malta CEO less than a year after he was appointed
The government in a formal statement said Borg had “an extraordinary breadth of international experience, especially in the maritime and oil and gas industries.” His ambassadorship is forecast to help facilitate closer bilateral cooperation between Malta and Panama, particularly in global trade, maritime partnerships, and economic development.
At a moment when Malta is seeking to strengthen its strategic presence and commercial links in Central and South America, Borg takes on the diplomatic responsibilities.
With leadership changes at the transport ministry, Borg takes over in April 2023 as chief of Transport Malta—an assignment he had from June 2022 to now—that Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi had.
