Europe’s Bleak Future: More Military, Less Democracy

Europe is facing a bleak future, with experts predicting a shift towards more military spending and a potential decline in democracy. The continent is struggling to find its footing in a rapidly changing world, with the rise of far-right forces, caretaker governments, and growing tensions with Russia. The European Union is under pressure to increase its military spending and take more responsibility for its own security, with US President Donald Trump urging European countries to substantially increase their defense spending.

This push for more military spending comes as the EU is already facing challenges in achieving strategic autonomy. Almost half of respondents in a recent survey expected Europe to achieve strategic autonomy over the next ten years, but this is uncertain. The EU is also struggling with internal issues, including a lack of strategic vision, the surge of far-right forces, and the multiplication of caretaker governments.

The decline of democracy is another concern, with 40% of respondents expecting a democratic depression by 2035. The EU is facing challenges in maintaining its democratic values, with some countries experiencing a decline in democratic institutions. The rise of authoritarianism and populism is also a concern, with some leaders undermining democratic norms.

The future of Europe is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the continent needs to invest in its own strength and take responsibility for its own security. This requires a shift towards more military spending, but also a commitment to democratic values and institutions. The EU needs to find a way to balance its military ambitions with its democratic principles, or risk facing a bleak future.
