EU Warns of Retaliation as US Slaps Harsh New Tariffs

The European Union is bracing for economic repercussions following the announcement of sweeping new tariffs by the United States, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from European Union leadership. U.S. President Donald Trump introduced the tariffs—imposing a particularly steep 20% rate on EU goods—under what he referred to as “Liberation Day.” This decision follows previous tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars, and auto parts, further intensifying transatlantic trade tensions.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded with a firm stance, expressing deep regret over the decision and describing it as chaotic and damaging. She warned that the consequences would be felt globally, with millions of consumers facing rising costs for essential goods such as food, medicine, and transportation. Inflationary pressures are expected to increase, further straining households and businesses alike.

Despite these concerns, von der Leyen emphasized that the EU will not remain passive. While she reaffirmed Europe’s preference for diplomatic resolution, she made it clear that the bloc is prepared to implement countermeasures if negotiations with the U.S. fail. The European Commission is currently assessing possible retaliatory actions to safeguard the interests of European industries and workers.

Beyond the immediate economic impact, there are growing concerns over secondary effects. Analysts warn that the new U.S. tariffs could lead to an influx of low-cost goods from other global markets—particularly China—into the European Union, creating additional challenges for European manufacturers. Von der Leyen assured that European authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action to mitigate any adverse consequences.

Bernd Lange, Chair of the European Parliament’s Trade Committee, was even more direct in his criticism. He denounced the tariffs as “unjustified, illegal, and disproportionate,” casting doubt on the U.S. administration’s willingness to engage in constructive discussions with the European Union.

As tensions escalate, the European Union finds itself at a critical juncture. While its leaders remain committed to negotiation as the preferred path forward, they are also preparing for the reality that a robust response may be necessary to protect European economic stability in the face of escalating trade restrictions.
