Malta’s Fuel Stations Under Pressure

fuel stations

Malta has one fuel station for every 4 square kilometers, serving a massive number of vehicles on the roads. According to parliamentary data, there are 76 fuel stations across Malta and Gozo—56 active and 20 awaiting license renewal after renovations.

With Malta and Gozo covering 316 square kilometers, this means an average of 5,693 petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles per station—a significant load given the island’s high vehicle density.

Regulatory and Environmental Status

  • 56 stations are actively licensed, while 20 are in the renewal process.

  • 49 stations have completed necessary upgrades, while others are at various stages of compliance.

  • Only 34 stations have an environmental permit from the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), while most others have pending applications.

Future Fuel Station Developments

  • No new petrol station applications have been submitted to ERA this year.

  • The Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS) has one pending application for a new fuel station.

Despite the rise of electric vehicles (13,081 registered by the end of last year), traditional fuel stations remain crucial, with ongoing infrastructure updates and environmental compliance efforts in progress.
