The St. Francis Church in Victoria, Gozo, was abuzz with activity on September 29 as devotees gathered to honor the patron saint of animals, ecology, and peace. The festivities began with the blessing of animals by Fr. Varghese Putenpurackal, OFM Conv., on the church parvis, drawing children and pet owners alike.
In the afternoon, Fr. Provincial Colin Sammut, OFM Conv., led a concelebrated mass, followed by a vibrant procession carrying the statue of St. Francis, crafted by Wistin Camilleri, through Victoria’s streets. The procession paused in front of the Our Lady of Pompeii sanctuary, where prayers were offered for global peace and white doves were released, symbolizing harmony and serenity.
The celebrations continue with the Translation of the Relic on October 3 at 6:15 pm, led by Provincial Vicar Fr. Paul Darmanin, OFM Conv., followed by mass and the Transitus ceremony, commemorating St. Francis’ passage from earthly life to eternal life.
On the feast day, October 4, Canon George Frendo will celebrate a special mass for the elderly and sick at 9 am. Gozo Bishop Anton Teuma will then lead a solemn mass at 6:30 pm, accompanied by the orchestra under Mro Ivan Attard’s direction.
These events underscore the significance of St. Francis’ legacy, emphasizing compassion, care for creation, and peace. The Franciscan community invites all to participate in these meaningful celebrations, fostering a sense of unity and spiritual connection.
