The Maltese are deeply concerned about extreme weather conditions and critical infrastructure disruptions, according to the Eurobarometer survey “Disaster Risk Awareness and Preparedness of the EU Population”. Conducted between February and March 2024, the survey polled 26,411 people across the EU, including 506 in Malta.
Extreme weather events, such as heatwaves and storms, top the list of concerns for 56% of Maltese respondents, surpassing the EU average of 38%. Critical infrastructure disruptions, including power cuts, gas, and water supply shortages, worry 48% of the Maltese, more than double the EU average of 21%. Human health emergencies and cybersecurity threats also feature prominently, with 33% and 23% of respondents citing these as major concerns.
In terms of preparedness, the Maltese demonstrate a proactive approach. An impressive 74% keep a flashlight or candle accessible in case of a power cut, exceeding the EU average of 47%. Additionally, 62% maintain a home pharmacy for emergencies, and 52% store emergency food and drink supplies.
The survey also reveals a high level of trust in authorities, with 75% of respondents trusting information from public authorities and emergency services. In the event of a massive emergency, 68% of respondents have enough gas to continue cooking for over seven days, and 53% have enough food to last over a week.
However, a significant vulnerability is exposed when it comes to electricity supply disruptions. Only 4% can power their homes for over a week, while 71% would manage for one day or less. This highlights the need for increased investment in renewable energy sources and emergency power solutions.
The European Commission recognizes the importance of disaster resilience and has established tools like the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to strengthen cooperation and response to disasters. By understanding public concerns and priorities, policymakers can develop targeted strategies to enhance disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.
The survey’s findings underscore the importance of ongoing efforts to address the Maltese concerns and promote a culture of resilience and preparedness. By working together, Malta can strengthen its ability to withstand and recover from disasters, ensuring a safer and more secure future for its citizens.
