Malta held a special place in Queen Elizabeth II’s heart, and she often described it as one of the happiest times of her life. The connection began in the late 1940s when she was still Princess Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, was stationed on the island with the Royal Navy. The couple lived at Villa Guardamangia in Pietà, and for two years they were able to live relatively normal lives away from the constant attention of royal duties in Britain.

Those years in Malta gave Elizabeth a rare taste of privacy and routine. She could drive herself, attend social gatherings, and enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle without the weight of the crown. Philip’s naval postings meant the island felt like a home rather than an official residence, and the couple formed close friendships with local families and service members. She later recalled walking through the streets, shopping, and being treated simply as a naval officer’s wife.

Even after she became Queen, that affection for Malta never faded. She returned several times for Commonwealth meetings and state visits, and each time spoke warmly about the warmth of the Maltese people and the island’s beauty. The sense of freedom and joy she experienced in her early married life stayed with her, and it’s why Malta remained a “happy place” in her memory, a reminder of a quieter chapter before the responsibilities of the throne took over.
