Malta has recorded its hottest July day on record after temperatures climbed to 43.3°C, shattering previous benchmarks and pushing the islands into extreme heat conditions. The mercury rose steadily through the morning and peaked in the early afternoon, with weather stations across Malta and Gozo reporting values well above the seasonal average.

The intense heat brought the kind of weather usually associated with heatwaves further south, leaving streets quieter than usual as people sought shade and air conditioning. Authorities urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours, and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors. Hospitals also reported an increase in heat-related cases, mostly linked to dehydration and exhaustion.

The Malta Meteorological Office said the new reading breaks the previous July record and reflects a broader pattern of rising summer temperatures in the Mediterranean. Experts point to high pressure over North Africa and dry, hot winds as the main drivers behind this week’s spike.

With little relief forecast overnight, temperatures are expected to remain uncomfortably high. Officials are reminding the public to take precautions over the coming days, as the combination of strong sun, humidity, and little wind makes the heat feel even more intense.
