The Alternattiva Demokratika Partit Demokratiku (ADPD) has emphasized the need for enhanced coordination between European Union governments regarding the bloc’s defence. This appeal comes at a time when the EU is facing numerous security challenges, including rising great power competition, terrorism, cyber attacks, and climate change

.In recent years, the EU’s security landscape has undergone significant transformations, with the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chains and highlighted the importance of European strategic autonomy. Against this backdrop, the ADPD’s call for closer coordination on defence issues takes on added urgency. The EU’s ability to respond effectively to emerging security threats is hindered by the divergent threat perceptions among its member states.

While there is a broad consensus on the need for a stronger European defence, opinions vary on the desired level of autonomy from the United States. Some member states advocate for increased European defence integration, while others prefer to maintain a strong transatlantic partnership. To address these challenges, the EU must foster a more unified approach to defence and security. This can be achieved through enhanced cooperation and information-sharing among member states, as well as investments in European defence capabilities. By strengthening its collective defence, the EU can better protect its citizens and promote stability in its neighbourhood.
