The 2025 Special Olympics World Games officially commenced on Saturday at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Italy.
The event is special as it marked the first time that Italy has hosted the Special Olympics World Games.It brought 1,500 athletes from more than 100 countries to participate in eight different sports. The Games’ goal is to provide opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities, highlighting the profound impact of sports on their lives. The ceremony was stunning display of vibrant performances. Milan’s Allegro Moderato Choir—a unique ensemble of 51 singers with and without intellectual disabilities—delivered a powerful musical performance. A team of 106 runners carried out the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, adding to the event’s significance.

The festivities continued with Turin’s Sunshine Gospel Choir and the dynamic marching band Bandaradan, whose lively melodies and interactive performances created an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie. A deeply moving highlight came from a unified dance ensemble, blending the talents of dancers with and without intellectual disabilities from Yoann Bourgeois Art Company and Oltre Le Quinte, crafting a performance that embodied the spirit of inclusion. Before the opening ceremony, law enforcement officers and athletes carried the Flame of Hope across Northern Italy, beginning in Athens, Greece, on February 25, 2025. The torch relay concluded at the Pala Alpitour Stadium on March 8, marking the start of the Games.
