Chelsea Football Club has strongly condemned the “hateful” homophobic abuse directed towards star striker Sam Kerr and her partner, Kristie Mewis, after they announced they’re expecting a baby. The couple shared the exciting news on social media, but unfortunately, their joy was marred by unacceptable and hurtful comments from some individuals .
Chelsea’s head coach, Sonia Bompastor, was quick to offer her support to Kerr, stating that the comments were “unacceptable” and “crazy” in this day and age. Captain Millie Bright also weighed in, emphasizing that there’s no room for such discriminatory comments in society, and certainly not in football .
The club’s LGBTQ+ and friends supporter group, Chelsea Pride, also released a statement denouncing the abuse and reiterating their commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans. They emphasized that homophobia has no place in football or society, and that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity .
England Women’s boss Sarina Wiegman also expressed her support for Kerr and Mewis, calling the abuse “very disappointing” and emphasizing the importance of promoting love, pride, and unity .
Chelsea Football Club has made it clear that they will not tolerate any form of discrimination or abuse, and that they stand in solidarity with Kerr, Mewis, and the entire LGBTQ+ community.
