Maltese Minister Clayton Bartolo has sparked outrage among professionals for downplaying the importance of degrees. Bartolo defended his wife’s lucrative job, saying that life is “not just about diplomas or degrees” . This statement has been slammed as “irresponsible” by professionals, who argue that qualifications and expertise are essential for competent service delivery.

The controversy surrounds Bartolo’s wife, Amanda Muscat, who was given a consultancy contract despite lacking the necessary qualifications. An investigation by the Standards Commissioner found that Bartolo and fellow Minister Clint Camilleri breached the ministerial code of ethics by awarding Muscat the contract .

Professionals are concerned that Bartolo’s dismissal of degrees undermines the value of education and expertise in the workplace. They argue that qualifications are essential for ensuring that professionals have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their jobs effectively.

The incident has also raised questions about the government’s commitment to upholding ethical standards in public office. The Prime Minister has defended Bartolo and Camilleri, refusing to ask for their resignation . This has sparked criticism from opposition MPs, who argue that the government is not taking the issue seriously enough.
