Russian strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region have killed at least 6 people, Ukrainian officials said, in one of the deadliest barrages on the capital area in recent months.
Air raid sirens sounded across the city overnight as drones and missiles targeted residential districts and critical infrastructure. Emergency services reported that several buildings were hit, sparking fires and leaving people trapped under rubble. The casualties included both Kyiv residents and people in nearby towns in the Kyiv region, where damage to power lines and housing was also reported.
Local authorities said rescue operations continued into the morning, with crews searching through debris for possible survivors. Hospitals in the capital were placed on alert to treat the wounded, while power and heating outages were reported in some neighborhoods after strikes damaged energy facilities.
The attack comes as Russia has intensified long-range strikes on Ukrainian cities, aiming to pressure civilian morale and strain air defenses ahead of the winter. Kyiv officials condemned the strikes as a deliberate targeting of civilians and called for more air defense systems from Western partners.
For residents of Kyiv, the latest deaths are a grim reminder that the capital remains within range despite months of fortified defenses. As cleanup begins and families mourn, Ukrainian leaders say the response will be to keep strengthening air defenses and to press allies for additional support to protect cities from further attacks.
