A 74-year-old man has denied charges of attempted murder after allegedly opening fire on police officers during an incident in Ta’ Giorni.

The case came before the courts after the shooting, which took place when officers responded to a disturbance at a property in the area. Prosecutors allege that the man discharged a firearm in the direction of police, putting several officers at risk before he was apprehended at the scene. No officers were reported to have been hit, but the prosecution said the actions could have had fatal consequences.

In court, the elderly man pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and related firearms offenses. His defense argued that the circumstances surrounding the incident need to be fully examined, and requested bail pending further proceedings. The magistrate was told that investigations are still ongoing, including forensic analysis of the weapon and statements from those who were present.

Given the seriousness of the charges, the court remanded the man in custody while ordering further medical and psychological assessments. The prosecution emphasized the danger posed to law enforcement during the alleged attack, while the defense maintained that the accused intends to contest the charges.

The case has drawn attention locally due to both the location and the age of the accused. It will return to court in the coming weeks as police continue to compile evidence and the judiciary reviews whether the case should proceed by way of indictment.
