A police sergeant was punched on the head during an incident in Paceville over the weekend, in what authorities are describing as a direct assault on an officer on duty.
The attack happened in the early hours in the busy nightlife area, where officers were responding to a disturbance. According to police, the sergeant intervened to de-escalate a confrontation between a group of people when he was struck from behind. He was taken to hospital for treatment and is said to be recovering, though the blow left him with injuries that required medical attention.
Other officers at the scene moved in quickly and managed to detain one person in connection with the assault. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and to identify whether others were involved. Police said the incident is being treated seriously, given that it targeted a member of the force carrying out his duties.
The case has drawn concern from both the police union and government officials, who condemned violence against law enforcement. They stressed that officers in Paceville regularly face difficult situations as they work to keep crowds safe during late-night hours, and that attacks like this cannot be tolerated.
The suspect is expected to face charges related to assault and obstruction. Meanwhile, police have increased patrols in the area and said they will continue to work with bar and club operators to maintain order. For the force, the priority now is supporting the injured sergeant and ensuring those responsible are held to account.
