Iran has warned of “irreversible damage” to regional infrastructure and energy facilities in the Middle East if the US targets its power plants, following an ultimatum from US President Donald Trump to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that regional infrastructure would become “legitimate targets” if Iran’s facilities are struck, potentially increasing oil prices. The Iranian military has also threatened to target US and Israeli energy and infrastructure assets in the region if its energy facilities are attacked.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway, with approximately 20% of global oil exports passing through it. Iran’s threats have raised concerns about the potential escalation of conflict in the region, with the international community urging restraint. The situation remains volatile, with the US and Iran engaging in a war of words and military posturing.
