Families relying on social benefits in Malta are struggling with a substantial shortfall of €4,600 to maintain a basic living standard. According to Caritas Malta, this gap highlights the challenges low-income households face in affording essential goods and services. The Maltese government has introduced measures to support families, including increased child allowances and cost-of-living adjustments, with allocations reaching nearly €1.6 billion for social benefits in 2025.
The annual child supplement has been increased, with families earning less than €27,434 annually receiving €660 per child, and those earning more receiving €640 per child. Additionally, the In-Work Benefit provides up to €1,550 per child annually for eligible families. Despite these efforts, the existing support seems insufficient, emphasizing the need for continued support and policy adjustments.
