Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that the storm fund for Storm Harry will be linked to the legalisation of structures, following public outcry over potential misuse of funds. The government had initially faced criticism for possibly compensating businesses with illegal structures, including outdoor furniture and encroachments on public spaces. In response, Abela’s administration clarified that assistance will only be provided to households and law-abiding businesses genuinely affected by the storm.
The government is assessing damage and holding individual talks with affected businesses, with a focus on regeneration and ensuring no one is left without support. Existing schemes like Microinvest and the Business Development Scheme will be utilised to support enterprises, while additional aid is being considered for farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen.
