The Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is set to retire on May 13, 2025, but there’s been no official word on his replacement. According to reports, Justice Khanna has recommended Justice B.R. Gavai, the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor. If approved, Justice Gavai will become the 52nd Chief Justice of India, serving until November 23, 2025.
Justice Gavai’s appointment would be historic, as he’d be the first judge from the Scheduled Caste community to hold the position since Justice K.G. Balakrishnan. His tenure is expected to focus on upholding constitutional principles and strengthening the rule of law.
