High-stakes talks between the US and Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine have failed to yield a breakthrough, with the Kremlin stating that no compromise has been reached on the key issue of territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin met with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner in Moscow, discussing a revised US peace plan. However, Putin’s top aide Yuri Ushakov said that while some American proposals are acceptable, others are not, and work will continue.

The talks were part of a week of intensive diplomacy, with the US and Ukraine revising the original 28-point peace plan amid concerns it made too many concessions to Moscow. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has insisted that any plan must end the war for good and not just lead to a pause in fighting. The US and Russia have been at odds over Ukraine’s territorial integrity, with Putin demanding that Kyiv surrender territory Moscow claims as its own.

Despite the lack of progress, Ushakov described the talks as “useful” and “constructive,” with both sides agreeing to continue discussions. The US has not publicly commented on the talks, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier that negotiations had made some progress.
