The Painful Journey of Seeking Justice for Femicide Victims

16 days missing and murdered

The court process can be a grueling experience, especially for families of femicide victims. The sister of a femicide victim described it as “the hardest thing”, highlighting the emotional toll it takes on loved ones. Femicide, the killing of women because of their gender, is a pervasive issue worldwide, with many cases going unreported or unresolved.

In many countries, the legal system struggles to effectively address femicide, often due to inadequate laws, lack of support for victims’ families, and societal attitudes that perpetuate violence against women. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled against countries like Georgia for failing to prevent and investigate femicide cases, emphasizing the need for stronger measures to protect women’s rights.

For families, navigating the court system can be overwhelming. Delays, intimidation, and lack of support can discourage them from pursuing justice. In Kenya, for example, it takes an average of 1,900 days for a femicide case to be concluded in court, leaving families feeling frustrated and hopeless.

Despite these challenges, many families are fighting for change, advocating for policy reforms, and seeking support for victims’ loved ones. Organizations and activists are working tirelessly to raise awareness about femicide and push for stronger laws and protections.
