Spain is mourning its third wildfire-related death this week, as the country grapples with severe wildfires fueled by an unrelenting heatwave. The extreme summer heat, exacerbated by human-driven climate change, has created tinderbox conditions across southern Europe, stretching firefighters across the region, including Portugal and the Balkans. Over 157,000 hectares of land have been scorched in Spain alone.

Meanwhile, Greece has made significant progress in battling a major blaze that threatened its third-largest city, Patras. Firefighters have begun beating back the flames, and Greece has requested EU assistance to combat the wildfires. The country has experienced multiple wildfires, resulting in substantial damage and necessitating evacuations. Last year’s devastating Attica wildfires burned over 8,594 hectares of land, caused one death, and injured two people. International aid poured in from countries like Romania, France, Italy, and Turkey to help combat the fires.
