US President Donald Trump has brushed off criticism over the demolition of part of the White House to build a new ballroom, saying the sound of the construction work is “music to my ears”. The demolition, which began earlier this week, has sparked controversy among Democrats, who accuse Trump of failing to respect the presidential mansion. Trump, however, insists that the work is necessary and that taxpayers will not foot the bill for the $250 million project.

Trump claims he is partly funding the construction of the ballroom, with private and corporate donors covering the rest. He made the comments while speaking to Republican lawmakers gathered in the White House Rose Garden, where the sounds of demolition could be heard in the background. Trump compared the construction noise to “money” and said it reminds him of the lack of money because he’s paying for it.

The White House has rejected criticism of the project, calling it “manufactured outrage” and a “bold, necessary addition” to the executive mansion. The project has been defended as being in line with the storied history of improvements and renovations made by previous presidents. Despite the controversy, Trump remains committed to the project, stating that it will be “beautiful” and pay “total respect” to the existing building.
