A devastating shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, has left 15 people dead, including a 10-year-old girl and a Holocaust survivor. The victims were attending a Hanukkah celebration when two gunmen opened fire, sparking widespread outrage and grief.
The 10-year-old victim, Matilda Britvan, was described as a “bright, joyful, and spirited child who brought light to everyone around her”. Her aunt, Lina Chernykh, expressed her family’s devastation, saying, “We will be forever heartbroken”.
Among the victims was also Alex Kleytman, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who died shielding his wife from the gunfire. Kleytman and his wife had survived the Holocaust in Siberia and had been married for nearly 60 years.
Other victims include Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a 41-year-old father of five, and Dan Elkayam, a 27-year-old French national who had moved to Australia last year. The shooting has sparked concerns about antisemitism and gun laws in Australia, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vowing to strengthen regulations.
