Tom Cruise pays tribute to Val Kilmer at CinemaCon

Paying homage to his Top Gun costar Val Kilmer, who passed away this week at the age of 65, Tom Cruise mourned the loss of his friend. Cruise, speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, led a moment of silence for Kilmer, referring to him as “a close friend” and showing significant regard for his abilities and character.

Cruise noted Kilmer’s iconic performance as Iceman in the 1986 film, therefore emphasizing how much he respected his work, valued him as an individual, and felt grateful and honored to have him on Top Gun.


Famous for his roles in films including The Doors, Batman Forever, and Heat, Kilmer had long been battling health problems, including throat cancer, that required several operations.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022) was his final film appearance; his lines were delivered via text and a little spoken used.
In a packed room of industry professionals at the CinemaCon show, Cruise drooped his head and finished his tribute by saying, ‘Thank you, Val—wishing you well on your next journey.’

An Enduring Bond

Cruise has often spoken about Kilmer fondly, reminiscing that their reunion in Top Gun: Maverick was quite emotional. On a prior Jimmy Kimmel Live! , interview he said he cried when collaborating with Kilmer once more.“I was crying, I was crying. ‘I started to feel tearful,’ Cruise remarked. “He’s a fantastic actor. His work inspires me.”

Hollywood Mourns a Legend

Kilmer’s passing has sent Hollywood into a flurry of heartfelt eulogies. His family has announced that he had died of pneumonia issues.
Top Gun: Maverick was a beautiful send off to his beloved character and even with his health problems, he kept inspiring fellow fans and members.
Iceman and Maverick have a heartfelt hug in one of the most touching scenes of the film. Iceman, played by Kilmer, manages to deliver a last message to Cruise’s character after communicating via typing on the screen: “The Navy requires Maverick.While Hollywood celebrates Kilmer’s memory, Cruise’s tribute at CinemaCon emphasizes the close relationship they had both on and off the screen.
