Russia has stated that there is no precise timeframe set for a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, downplaying expectations for an imminent meeting. This announcement comes after Trump and Putin announced they would meet in Budapest to discuss resolving the war in Ukraine, following a phone call between the two leaders. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that “serious preparation” is needed for the summit, suggesting that it may not happen soon.

Peskov’s comments indicate that neither Trump nor Putin has given exact dates for the meeting, and Russia currently has “no understanding” of when the summit might take place. This uncertainty is further complicated by Russia’s rejection of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, which has cast a cloud over attempts at negotiations. European allies are concerned that Trump might meet Putin without getting significant concessions from Russia, and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ruled out territorial concessions.

Despite these challenges, preparations for a potential summit are underway, with US and Russian envoys expected to meet soon to facilitate senior-level talks. However, a meeting between Trump and Putin is considered “unlikely” next week, according to Russian negotiator Yuri Ushakov.
