Pope Leo XIV delivered his first Christmas blessing, urging world leaders to work towards peace and an end to global conflicts. In his “Urbi et Orbi” message, he lamented the suffering of people in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Mali, Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia, calling for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue. The Pope emphasized that peace can only be achieved through empathy, understanding, and compassion, citing the fragility of human life and the devastating impact of war.
He specifically mentioned the plight of Palestinians in Gaza, who are struggling to survive amidst harsh weather conditions and limited aid. Pope Leo also highlighted the struggles of migrants and refugees, advocating for their dignity and rights. He encouraged world leaders to prioritize humanity and work towards reconciliation, saying, “May the clamour of weapons cease, and may the parties involved, with the support and commitment of the international community, find the courage to engage in sincere, direct and respectful dialogue”.
