The Pentagon is considering demoting Democratic Senator Mark Kelly’s military rank and reducing his retirement pay over a video he participated in, urging US troops to refuse illegal orders. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has issued a formal letter of censure, accusing Kelly of “reckless misconduct” and “seditious statements” that undermine good order and military discipline. Kelly, a retired Navy captain, has served in the US Navy for over 25 years, including 39 combat missions and four space missions. He has strongly rejected the allegations, calling the investigation “outrageous” and vowing to fight the decision, stating that reminding troops to refuse illegal orders is consistent with US law.

Hegseth’s move has sparked controversy, with Kelly accusing him of trying to intimidate and punish critics of the Trump administration. The Pentagon has given Kelly 30 days to respond, and the process is expected to conclude within 45 days. If demoted, Kelly’s military pension will be reduced accordingly.
