Italy’s former gymnastics chief, Emanuela Maccarani, is set to stand trial over allegations of athlete abuse. Maccarani, who was dismissed from her position as Olympic female rhythmic gymnastics coach, had been under investigation for alleged mistreatment of young gymnasts. The allegations include forcing gymnasts to weigh themselves before teammates and insulting athletes if they appeared overweight.

Two former gymnasts, Anna Basta and Nina Corradini, accused Maccarani of psychological abuse when she coached them. Both gymnasts were under 18 at the time. Maccarani has denied all wrongdoing, stating it was “devastating” to consider the effect her dismissal would have on the rhythmic gymnastics team. She expressed more concern about the team’s well-being than her own future.

The dismissal of Maccarani has sparked contrasting reactions among athletes and campaigners. Some have welcomed the move as a step towards protecting young gymnasts, while others have sided with the former coach. Martina Centofanti, a star of the rhythmic gymnastics team, expressed concerns about the impact on the team’s sports programming.

This case highlights the ongoing issue of athlete abuse in sports, particularly in gymnastics, where young athletes are often vulnerable to exploitation and mistreatment. Experts have noted that gymnastics can be a “petri dish for abuse” due to the sport’s emphasis on discipline and control. The case against Maccarani serves as a reminder of the need for greater accountability and protections for athletes in sports.
