Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has described US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on European countries opposing his plan to acquire Greenland as a “mistake”. Meloni, who has a good relationship with Trump, stated that imposing new sanctions would be a mistake, adding that she had conveyed her concerns to Trump during a phone call. She emphasized that NATO should take an active role in addressing the growing crisis, suggesting a problem of “understanding and communication” between Europe and the US regarding Greenland.
European leaders are pushing back against Trump’s tariff threat, with the EU warning of a “dangerous downward spiral” and potential retaliation. The EU is considering countermeasures, including the Anti-Coercion Instrument, which could limit US access to public tenders or restrict trade in services. The dispute has sparked concerns about the impact on transatlantic relations and global markets.
