As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, European allies are seeking to present a united front in support of Ukraine. This move comes at a critical juncture, as US backing for Ukraine appears to be wavering. Senior US officials are planning to meet with their counterparts from Moscow and Kyiv in Saudi Arabia, sparking concerns about the potential for a shift in US policy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been actively seeking support from European leaders, outlining his five-point “victory plan” to end the devastating war with Russia.¹ The plan includes an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO and permission to use Western-supplied longer-range missiles to strike military targets deep inside Russia. However, these proposals have been met with reluctance by Kyiv’s allies, who are concerned about the potential for escalation.
Despite these challenges, European allies remain committed to supporting Ukraine, with the EU reaffirming its “unwavering commitment” to providing continued political, financial, economic, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support to Ukraine and its people. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether European allies can present a united front in support of Ukraine, and whether US policy will shift in response to the ongoing conflict.
