Bratislava has introduced a new law setting a maximum speed limit of 6km/h for all pavement users, including pedestrians, cyclists, skaters, and e-scooter riders. The law aims to improve safety on pavements, but it has sparked controversy and criticism, with many considering it “nonsensical” and questioning how it will be enforced. Those who exceed the limit could face fines of up to €100.
Critics argue that the law is unnecessary, as most accidents occur on roads, not pavements. In 2024, 67 pedestrians and 22 cyclists or scooter riders died in accidents, but police statistics don’t record pavement accidents separately. The law has also raised concerns about its impact on children, who may struggle to maintain balance at such a low speed. The law is set to come into effect on January 1, 2026, amidst ongoing debates about its effectiveness and practicality.
