Cairo: A tragic accident unfolded off Egypt’s Red Sea coast when a tourist submarine carrying Russian visitors sank near Hurghada, a resort town popular with vacationers. According to officials, six people lost their lives, including two children, while dozens of others were pulled from the water and taken to safety.
The vessel, operated by Sindbad Submarines, had been on an underwater excursion to explore coral reefs when disaster struck about a kilometer from shore. Initial reports suggest that 45 tourists, including minors, were on board. Egyptian authorities have launched an investigation to determine what went wrong.
Hurghada, known for its crystal-clear waters and thriving tourism industry, has seen its share of maritime tragedies. Just last year, a dive boat capsized near Marsa Alam, leaving several dead, while other incidents have resulted in rescues and, in some cases, fatal outcomes.
Despite the clear weather, the accident raises fresh concerns over the safety of recreational diving and submarine tours in the region. As officials work to piece together the cause, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the risks that can come with exploring the depths of the sea.
