A recent Eurobarometer study has revealed that Maltese citizens are increasingly worried about the spread of fake AI content and disinformation. The survey found that 59% of Maltese respondents aged 16-30 reported encountering disinformation often or very often, which is more than double the EU average. Interestingly, 89% of these young Maltese citizens expressed confidence in their ability to discern fake news, highlighting a paradox in their relationship with information and politics.
The rise of generative AI has made it easier for malicious actors to create and disseminate convincing disinformation, posing significant risks to democratic processes, scientific credibility, and public trust. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated, it’s becoming harder to distinguish fact from fiction.
