In 2027, Malta will be the venue of the eighth Commonwealth Youth Games, bringing together over 1,000 athletes aged 14 to 18 from 74 nations and territories. Eight disciplines will be followed by these young athletes. Though the precise dates have not yet been made public, the games are expected to start in late 2027.

Malta will be hosting the games for the first time here. According to Commonwealth Sport, the organization in charge of the event, this choice demonstrates their determination to take the games to fresh sites, notably smaller and island countries. Malta’s scheme calls for topquality sports facilities already present on the islands of Gozo and Malta. Four primary sites will host activities. Athlete Villages will be hotels on both islands, enabling teams to stay near the venues.

Located in Southern Europe, Malta is a tiny island nation. Between North Africa and Sicily, it lies in the Mediterranean Sea.

For the first time, the games will feature two fresh sports. These are water polo and sailing. Athletics and para-athletics, netball, squash, swimming and para-swimming, triathlon, and weightlifting are among the other activities included in the programme.

The games will also include the most events for disabled athletes. First time inclusion will be in Para swimming. This builds on the para athletics inclusion in the last edition of the games, which took place in Trinidad and Tobago in 2023.

The organizers claimed the event was created to draw local youngsters as well as those from other Commonwealth nations. Rather than constructing new ones, they hope to utilize current modern sporting facilities.

Earlier in Pune in 2008, India had staged the third game.

Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare said they are eager to host the event in Malta. He complimented Malta’s athlete-centric strategy, robust sports infrastructure, and expertise in organising international events. He believes these youth games are far more than just a sporting contest. For the young athletes engaged, they are also a significant trip. He termed them Commonwealth current voices of change and future stars.

He said the organisers were eager for the games and for a trip to Malta, which he called a lovely spot.
