In a move that brings one of Maltese football’s most iconic figures back to the national setup, Gilbert Agius has returned as head coach of the Malta Under-21 national team, marking his second spell in charge of the age-group side after first taking over in January 2021. The former Valletta talisman, Malta international with 120 caps and eight goals, and UEFA Pro Licence holder who became the Lilywhites’ all-time leading scorer and most decorated player with 36 titles during a 31-year association, had left the Malta FA in November 2022 after being presented with a memento for his service, having also briefly served as interim coach of the senior national team with spirited performances against the Republic of Ireland and a 2-2 draw against Greece. His departure at the time saw him pursue a new challenge abroad as head coach of PSIS Semarang in Indonesia’s top tier, where he spent two seasons from 2023 to 2025, before a short stint back home with Żabbar St. Patrick in early 2026. The Malta FA confirmed that the door would always remain open for Agius, with President Bjorn Vassallo describing him as an icon who had contributed brilliantly in all coaching roles entrusted to him, and his return is seen as part of the Technical Centre’s strategy to reconnect the Under-21 pathway with a unified game philosophy while nurturing young talent capable of stepping up to Emilio De Leo’s senior squad. Now 52, Agius takes over a new-look Under-21 group tasked with building identity and discipline ahead of the next UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying cycle, bringing with him experience of developing players under lofty demands of international football and a deep understanding of what it means to represent Malta at youth level, having himself represented the Under-21s 16 times as a player.
