The Algerian Football Federation has extended the contract of national team head coach Vladimir Petkovic and his technical staff until 2028, signaling strong confidence in the Bosnian-Swiss manager just days before the 2026 World Cup kicks off in North America. Petkovic, who took charge in February 2024, has overseen a significant turnaround for the Fennecs, guiding Algeria to 21 wins, four draws, and only three defeats in 28 matches since his appointment. Under his leadership, the team secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup after missing the 2018 and 2022 editions, and reached the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following consecutive group-stage exits in 2021 and 2023. The improved results have also lifted Algeria from 43rd to 28th in the FIFA world rankings and from seventh to fourth in Africa during his tenure.
The federation said the extension reflects “stability and confidence in the work accomplished” and forms part of a long-term project that looks beyond the upcoming World Cup. Petkovic’s initial deal was due to expire immediately after the tournament, but it contained an automatic extension clause triggered by successful qualification. He will now remain at the helm under the same terms, reportedly earning €135,000 per month, and received a qualification bonus estimated between €400,000 and €500,000 for achieving the primary objective. Officials emphasized that the decision prioritizes continuity and shields the coach from post-World Cup coaching market volatility, allowing preparations to focus on building a squad capable of progressing beyond the group stage for the first time since Brazil 2014.
Algeria will open their World Cup Group J campaign against Argentina on June 17, before facing Jordan and Austria. The FAF also has clear continental ambitions, with expectations for the team to at least reach the quarter-finals of future Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 2027 and 2028. Since taking over, Petkovic has been credited with restoring tactical discipline and team cohesion, and the federation views his presence as essential to maintaining progress and developing consistency within the squad. The agreement in principle had been reached months earlier, with a draft contract sent to Petkovic’s legal representatives, and only the formal signing remained to finalize the deal ahead of the tournament.
