Sliema’s popular Qui Si Sana beach has been closed to swimmers after a sewage leak was detected in the area, prompting immediate action from local authorities. The decision was taken as a precaution to protect public health, with warning signs put up and access restricted while investigations and clean-up works get underway.
Officials said the leak was identified during routine monitoring, and tests showed elevated levels of contamination in the water near the shore. As a result, entry to the water and the immediate beach area has been prohibited until further notice. Crews have been deployed to locate the source of the discharge, contain it, and carry out the necessary repairs to the infrastructure.
The closure comes at a busy time for the seaside spot, which is a favorite for both residents and visitors during the warmer months. Many people who frequent Qui Si Sana expressed disappointment, but most agreed that safety has to come first given the risks linked to sewage exposure.
Authorities have said the beach will remain closed until water quality tests confirm it is safe to reopen. Updates will be issued once the repairs are complete and the area has been cleared. In the meantime, swimmers are being urged to use alternative beaches nearby while the remediation work continues.
